- During the years of the
Lithuanian Republic the narrow gauge railway was used very
intensively. According to the old Lithuanian maps, the
length of this railway was 450 km till the World War II.
It had to carry loads - wood, quartz sand, cattle, flax,
sugar beets, food. It also was a very popular means of
communication. In 1929-1940 the trains went through
Anyksciai several times a day.
- Panevezys became the center
of the narrow gauge railway. The railway went to
Joniskelis, Pakruojis, Pasvalys, Birzai, Svencioneliai
from the center. After the war the narrow railway carried
wine, felts, corn to Berlin, the quartz sand to the
factories of Panevezys. Various loads were delivered to
Anyksciai too. From 1950 to 1980 the work of the station
was the most intensive.
- In the 6th decade the
railway engines were changed into heat engines. During
1970-1988 about 93 thousand tons of various loads were
taken away from the station and about 110 thousand loads
every year were delivered to this station. About 17
thousand passengers used the train as a means of
transport. But there were less passengers and the narrow
railway became more and more unprofitable.
- In 1972 the traffic on the
trains in the section Anyksciai-Utena-Svencioneliai was
canceled and the section between Utena-Rubikiai was
destroyed. The section Panevezys-Anyksciai-Rubikiai, which
is 68,4 km, was used for carrying loads, passengers and
for tourism. A very nice project was started in 1987 to
transform the section Anyksciai-Rubikiai to children’s
railway. But after some trips it stopped. Since the autumn
of 1999 the quartz sand has not been carried and on May
25, 2001 regular passenger trips were stopped. Now you can
only book trips in advance.
