GRANARY OF ANTANAS BARANAUSKAS

The Granary of a poet and bishop Antanas Baranauskas (1835–1902), built in 1826, is the first memorial museum in Lithuania. In this granary Antanas Baranauskas wrote a hymn for Lithuania`s past – a poem “Anykščių šilelis” (The Forest of Anykščiai) during the summers of 1858 and 1859. The poem has been inscribed into Lithuania`s Record Book as a piece of Lithuanian literature that has been provided the biggest number of translations into foreign languages (the record was registered by “Factum” agency in 2009). So far the poem has been translated into 19 languages: the poem in its full length has been rendered into Armenian, Czech, Dutch, English, Esperanto, German, Italian, Korean, Latvian, Polish, Russian and Ukrainian and its fragments are available in Byelorussian, Chuvash, French, Japanese, Norwegian, Tartarian and Turkish.  Nowadays authentic furniture, household items, and books of A. Baranauskas and his family are being kept and displayed here.

MEMORIAL HOUSE-MUSEUM OF ANTANAS VIENUOLIS-ŽUKAUSKAS

The memorial house-museum of the famous classic of 20th century Antanas Žukauskas-Vienuolis (1882–1957), which was born in Anykščiai, was former house of intellectuals of the town, where intertwined a pharmacist position and a writer‘s vocation, hundreds of years of Anyksciai history and Caucasus traditions.  In the green castle of Anyksciai, so named by town dwellers, visitors can see fully preserved memorial rooms and visit an exposition revealing A. Vienuolis life and his literary path, disclosing the writer’s influence on the cultural development of Anykščiai region. The writer’s grave is right outside the house in the garden.

MUSEUM EXHIBITION HALL – STONE PAINTINGS EXPOSITION OF STANISLOVAS PETRAŠKA

The exhibition hall of the museum hosts the permanent exhibition of stone paintings of the folk artist Stanislovas Petraška (1935–2009). To perpetuate landscapes of his homeland and Lithuanian national symbols and historic sites the painter used the unique technique of painting with stone dust, characteristic only to this artist. The process of the unique stone paintings comes to life in a video also presented at the museum.

MEMORIAL HOUSE-MUSEUM OF BRONĖ BUIVYDAITĖ

The memorial museum of Bronė Buivydaitė (1895–1984) opens the gates to Anykščiai Old town. In this green house a poet, playwright, children‘s writer Bronė Buivydaitė, also known by her pen-name as Tyrų Duktė (Daughter of the Wasteland), spent her childhood and later returned here to pass the last decades of her life. The museum`s exposition reflects writer`s life and presents her creative heritage. The orchard of sculptures and flowers is being created in the yard. A bookshop of Anykščiai publications Auksinis batelis (“Golden Bootee“) is opened in the Museum.

JONAS BILIŪNAS MEMORIAL HOMESTEAD-MUSEUM

The memorial homestead of a humanist writer Jonas Biliūnas (1879–1907) preserves the ethnographic spirit of the beginning of the 20th century. This place is an authentic witness of writer`s creativity springs. The surviving belongings of the Biliūnas family reveal the writer`s childhood environment. The other, recently renewed exposition introduces visitors to writer`s personal life as well as his creative path. Sculptures of some characters of J. Biliūnas’ stories are spread in the homestead.

J. Biliūnas tombstone on the Liudiškiai mound, considered one of symbols of Anykščiai, is being presented in the Museum.

DIDŽIULIAI MEMORIAL HOMESTEAD-MUSEUM

The Didžiuliai family memorial homestead-museum recalls the times then the Lithuanian language was banned. The first female-writer, author of the first Lithuanian culinary book, Liudvika Didžiulienė-Žmona (1856–1925) and famous bibliographer, folklore collector and passionate fighter against the ban of the Lithuanian press Stanislovas Didžiulis (1856–1927) lived there. In the end of the 19th century the Manor of Didžiuliai family has become the lighthouse of cultural life, region`s centre of book-carriers, thus a considerable part of the exposition is dedicated to members and supporters of the movement fighting the press ban.  The Museum has its own secret – the only original a banned press hiding-place in Lithuania has remained there. Visitors could experience how children used to learn at that time, it`s proposed to write with goose quill, read “grazdanka“(Lithuanian in Cyrillic), play ancient games. The Didžiuliai are buried next to the homestead, on Padvarninkai tumuli, where it opens picturesque surroundings.

NARROW-GAUGE RAILWAY MUSEUM

The 100 year-old train station of Anykščiai has preserved the original buildings, rails, water pumping tower, stone-paved square and special equipment once used for drawing different means of railway transport. The Narrow Gauge Railway Museum, established in this station complex, reflects the history of Lithuanian Narrow Gauge Railway. In authentic station building the station master`s cabinet is restored. The Pakhaus – former station storehouse, exposition displays various tools, communication as well signalisation means. The modern building located next to the old ones holds exhibits of the old-fashioned rolling-stock, such as the Skoda steam engine, railcars and various wagons. A special exposition dedicated to the period of Soviet regime deportations is displayed in a rail-carriage of that time.

The Museum also provides its visitors with an opportunity to go for a ride on a rail-bicycle or in a hand-powered rail car.

HISTORICAL COMPLEX OF ŠEIMYNIŠKĖLIAI HILLFORT

The Historical Complex of Šeimyniškėliai Hillfort remembers Mindaugas, the only king of Lithuania. The historical exposition of the observation tower introduces the visitors to the history of Šeimyniškėliai (Voruta) fortress – one of the largest wooden fortresses in the Eastern Europe, formerly located on the mound bearing the same name as the fortress. Some archaeological findings, the armour of 13th-14th century, household items once used by castle builders, residents and defenders in their everyday life as well as for warfare, the model of the fortress are displayed in the exposition. While in the yard the visitors can try themselves at archery.

HORSE MUSEUM

The heritage of traditional Lithuanian culture is preserved and promoted in the only Horse museum in the Baltic States. The Museum compiles a wide range of exhibits reflecting the importance of the horse for Lithuanian farming and culture over the long years of history. Horse-related farm implements, different horse-drawn carriages, smithery tools, unique collections of carvings created by folk artist Jurgis Kazlauskas (1914–1987) and of textiles made by region`s masters are displayed in different farmhouses. Recently renewed expositions present a horse history, a city transport as well as warfare topics. The museum presents various crafts, the visitors can observe the work of a weaver, ceramicist and bread baker, also a blacksmith, jeweller and a wood carver.

Outside, in the territory of the museum the visitors can enjoy themselves riding a horse, in a horse-drawn carriage or a sleigh or swinging.

Various educational programmes are held in the two traditional homesteads of Aukstaitija (eastern ethnographic region of Lithuania) and Museum`s Craft Centre. These programmes involve the folk customs of Christmas and Easter celebrations, local crafts presentations.
